For eleven years, WuXi AppTec's value proposition has been to provide high-quality R&D services to our customers in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Through the support of our customers, we have been able to achieve solid growth in our global business. We have grown from four founders and a single laboratory in December 2000 to more than 5,600 employees, more than 3 million square feet of laboratory and manufacturing space. On behalf of all WuXi AppTec's employees, I want to thank our many loyal customers for their ongoing trust and support.
The global pharmaceutical industry is striving to improve its R&D productivity, and an important part of that effort is increased offshore outsourcing of pharmaceutical R&D services. As a leading China-based pharmaceutical R&D services company, WuXi AppTec is well positioned to benefit from this trend and to play a growing role in helping our customers to develop the life-saving medicines of the future.
We are continuing to expand our innovation-driven and fully integrated pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device R&D service platform. Our company was founded around its capabilities in discovery chemistry. In recent years, we have added integrated downstream services in discovery biology, pharmacology, DMPK/ADME, formulation, process research, analytical services, bioanalytical testing services, and toxicology. We are making substantial progress toward our goal of offering a complete service platform, so that our customers can come to us to meet any of their needs for drug discovery and development services.
In response to client demand, WuXi AppTec is actively expanding its capabilities and capacity. We recently opened two new buildings in Shanghai that provide in-vivo pharmacology, DMPK, and discovery chemistry services. We established a new site in Wuhan to house new chemistry laboratories, to be operational by December this year. We have expanded our small-molecule manufacturing to offer both research and commercial manufacturing services. We are building a pilot-scale biologics manufacturing facility in Wuxi , to be operational by 2012. We have restructured a new STA company to improve our process R&D capabilities and enhance mass manufacturing capabilities of advanced intermediates and APIs. Our Suzhou safety evaluation facility, one of the largest such facilities in Asia , is now operational. We added biologic services to our integrated services platform, enabling us to develop and manufacture related protein drugs. We also constructed WuXi Genome Center , providing our customers with test design, high-throughput sequencing and integrated bioinformatics services. We recently acquired Abgent, Inc., Med-Tech Development Co. Ltd. and Jiecheng Med-Tech Development Co. Ltd. These acquisitions have not only expanded our capabilities in antibody and biological research reagent manufacturing and sales, but enabled us to enter the field of clinical research and regulatory affairs, largely expanding our capacity.
Throughout the company, we will continue to provide our customers with more and better services in the coming years to assist you in improving the success rate of research and shortening the time of new-product development. The focus at WuXi AppTec remains to strengthen our partnership with our global customers so we can help you achieve your strategic goal – to find and bring to market new life-saving and life-enhancing products more quickly and cost effectively.
